Is there a role for salt intake during nutritional ketosis?

  • In a high carbohydrate diet, kidneys retain salt (sodium) in the body
  • In a low carbohydrate, keto-adapted diet, kidneys clear salt from the body
  • If one combines a keto-adapted state with low salt (sodium) intake, that can lead to problems and associated symptoms including: Lightheadedness, dizziness, headaches, poor exercise tolerance
  • To maintain well-being, a modest intake of salt (not high salt) is therefore recommended in a low carbohydrate, keto-adapted state via the following: One to two cups of moderately salted broth daily, or liberally salting your food
